For the last year or two the popularity for dog clothing has become a fast growing trend, with our K9 companions decked out in the lasted couture that rivals some of the garments we buy for ourselves. Now our feline friends want their share.
I am receiving an increasing number of enquiries for clothing to suit cats. And while internationally their is very little directly marketed as kitty couture, the most common offerings are small sized dog clothes. While I try a find a suitable cat model (it takes a special personality) Phoenix has relunctantly been captured in a number of outfits to help demonstrate the fit of these. Trust me it is much easily to dress a cat than a dog, if they are willing, which is the tricky bit.
The important focus when measuring your cat for clothing is the girth, take this measurement from directly behind the front legs. Phoenix wears a size small.
The thing you should be aware of when wanting to dress your cat though is - a cats skin is covered with highly sensitive “touch spots,” which respond to the lightest pressure and in some cases the pressure of a garment is enough to make your cat go all wobbly. Phoenix is ok in light weight or short garments but the polar fleece (pictured top) was a bit much, losing contol over his back legs like he was drunk. Remove the garment and he was back to normal....must be a really weird sensation for a cat. The blue fleece with red paw print (bottom) is a midrift fit so a good choice for sensitive cats. This coat come complete with red scarf with white pom poms, which doubles as a great toy, also available in navy with green bone.
