We spent this Christmas boating at Great Barrier Island and it was the first long trip out for Milo and Gracie.
We took their life jackets for rough weather, which has great benefits by padding the dog plus giving you a nice handle to grab hold of when you need to.
While Gracie was straight off the back into the water Milo was not so keen and when he did get in paniced to get back onboard. Not wanting him to bark the bay down when we went in the water without him, I decided to put his life jacket on for general swimming. What a difference, his first time in he was instantly more confident and comfortable to stay in the water and swim with us, he even managed to do a swim from the boat to the beach and on return to the boat powered off leaving me and Gracie in his wake.
Milo is a German Shorthair Pointer and weighs about 35kg. He has a very deep chest and thin hip area which throws him out of balance in deep water. The life jacket has given him the lift and bouyancy in his chest area to keep his head well above the water without straining.
Swimming is such great low impact exercise for dogs of all ages. It helps build muscle and joint movement without strain on the joints. If your dog lacks confidence in the water I would definitely recommend trying them in a life jacket. We have them in multiple sizes to suit most dogs. It is most important to get the correct fit with the right weight bouyancy. If you need help fitting your dog correctly please do contact us. info@furrkids.co.nz
Recent client story:
I had a client come instore back in November. She had adopted a dog (approximately 9 months old) from the SPCA to find out that she had sever hip displasure, to the point they though it may be more humane to put her down now than have her struggle with the problem later on. Ofcourse the lady was not willing to contemplate this, so consulted with her vet who suggested swimming using a life jacket as an exercise alternative which could help with the problem.
She came and saw me and we fitted the dog with the correct jacket. She popped in about 4 weeks later beaming with joy to tell me that the life jacket has helped immensly and she was so happy that her dog another chance at rehabilitation.
